Money matters

Screenwriter John August (Big Fish, Corpse Bride) serves up excellent tips on managing finances, particularly after one’s “big sale”:

  1. Don’t quit your day job—until you have to
  2. It’s less money than you think
  3. WGA membership happens automatically
  4. Splurge on one thing
  5. Don’t rush to pay off your student loans
  6. Sock it away
  7. At some point, you’ll incorporate

He even breaks down the net take-home from a $100,000 script sale. If working with a writing partner, you would only get to walk away with $37,000 of it…

So when Dead Andy gets sold, I guess I’ll have to refrain from buying one of these babies. (But only until my next script, a WWII thriller, sells.)
